How to Prevent Retail Burnout - Spark Hire

How to Prevent Retail Burnout - Spark HireWhen your employees are working long hours, often on the weekends, and are constantly working to meet the needs of customers, burnout can quickly platzset in. This issue can cause you to lose top talent, thus impacting your stores performance. To prevent burnout among your team members, consider these tipsBe flexible about schedulingRetail employees must work unusual schedules, which can make attending to family needs and other concerns a challenge. Be respectful of this and make it a point to accommodate your staffers schedules whenever possible. If someone needs a day off to take their child to the doctor or to visit an elderly parent, give it to them. This wiggle room helps them to feel appreciated, and makes up for nights or weekends when they have to work when other people can be at home relaxing.Set goals for the storeWhen you hire someone and simply instruct them to sell, they may start to lose motivation as the weeks go on. However, w hen you set a daily goal for the store and each employee is made aware of this goal, you change the tone. Suddenly theres an exciting challenge to tackle, and youll see that your team members are much more motivated to reach that goal. Setting daily, weekly, and monthly goals helps everyone to stay focused and on task, and also brings out your employees competitive edge, making them better at what they do.Have regular team meetingsWith employees working different shifts, its likely that theyll have opposite schedules, making camaraderie hard to come by. To foster a sense of teamwork within your organization, gather the whole team together regularly. Whether you have a meeting to recap the stores progress or just go out to eat, helping your employees to connect and feel a part of a team encourages them to stick around and gives them a sense of support.Provide guidanceIt takes certain skills and personality traits to succeed at retail work. While many people have a natural ability to do well in retail work, they may bedrngnis have the knowledge or training needed to excel. Particularly for new team members, its important that you provide training and guidance in order to help everyone on your staff grow. Dont just assume theyll learn on their own.How do you prevent employee burnout in a retail setting? Let us know in the comments.Image pressmaster/Bigstock.com

This is the number of days you need to work to get mental health boost

This is the number of days you need to work to get mental health boostThis is the number of days you need to work to get mental health boostHow much do you really need to work, anyway? To pay your bills, about five days a week. But for the mental boost that feeling useful and being part of a team that work brings, about one, says a new study from the universities of Cambridge and Salford. Researchers are touting one day of paid work a week as the most effective dose.We have effective dosage guides for everything from Vitamin C to hours of sleep in order to help us feel better, but this is the first time the question has been asked of paid work, said study co-author Dr. Brendan Burchell, a sociologist from Cambridge University who leads the Employment Dosage research Project, in a release. We know unemployment is often detrimental to peoples wellbeing, negatively affecting identity, status, time use, and sense of collective purpose. We now have some idea of just how much paid work is n eeded to get the psychosocial benefits of employment and its not that much at all.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe study looked at how changes in working hours affected mental well-being and overall life satisfaction in over 70,000 UK residents between the ages of 16-64 using data from the UK Household Longitudinal Study between 2009 and 2018. Participants were asked about issues ranging from anxiety and sleep disturbances to determine mental health. They found a 30% reduction in risk of mental health problems in men when they moved from unemployment or stay-at-home parenting of eight hours or less of paid work. Women didnt see a similar reduction until they worked 20 hours, however. In a world where the specter of AI decimating jobs looms and unemployment is still a problem, Dr. Daiga Kamerade, study author from Salford University and Employment Dosage researcher, says, If t here is not enough for everybody who wants to work full-time, we will have to rethink current norms. This should include the redistribution of working hours, so everyone can get the mental health benefits of a job, even if that means we all work much shorter weeks. Our findings are an important step in thinking what the minimum amount of paid work people might need in a future with little work to go round, she added.Researchers suggested creative options for a future with less work, including five-day weekends, working just two hours a day, working one month for every two off, and increasing annual holidays from weeks to months. The traditional model, in which everyone works around 40 hours a week, welches never based on how much work was good for people, said study co-author and Cambridge sociologist Senhu Wang. Our research suggests that micro-jobs provide the same psychological benefits as full-time jobs.

Why men should add more colors to their work wardrobes

Why men should add more colors to their work wardrobes Why men should add more colors to their work wardrobes Though major strides have been made for men in fashion in the last few years, when it comes to office attire many men still shy away from color. Yes, in casual and athletic-wear (just think of all the color you see on a golf course) the brights abound, but in the office, it is all grays, blacks, browns, and other neutrals. But it turns out, men wearing color in the office can be a powerful move.Jacob Gallagher recently wrote in The Wall Street Journal, “A closet wholly devoid of color can make you look as repressed and stern (and out-of-date) as a character in an Ingmar Bergman film.” Though a recent SmartRecruiters survey that looked at 180 job applicants who were hired, the 70% that were hired said they wore black, color in the workplace does have a place. For example, red is considered a color that signifies success and prosperity. “Colors  are a lot more powerful than we think they are. They all represent different things and send different messages to our subconscious,” John Boitnott wrote in Inc.,  Basically if you put on a bright color, your mood will actually change and people will respond to that. For example, blue, a common color for men, does convey trust, calmness and confidence, but so do purple and green. However, these colors carry that message, but in a less aggressive way. And though men often tend to shy away from pink they should really consider wearing it at work  as a recent  Cotton USA study found  that men who wear pink shirts earn an extra $1,600 a year and are found to be better qualified, more confident, and get a greater number of compliments from female colleagues. Take that!“I am all for men embracing color into their wardrobes in the workplace.   I think it showcases character and lets one separate himself stylistically, by making a small clothing statement,” Brittney Levine, fashion and trend expert  who regularly appears on  NBC, CBS,   and E! News, told Ladders. Though she does understand that figuring out how to inc orporate color into one’s work wardrobe can be a bit challenging, at least at first.   “While I understand it can be daunting to undo a ‘monochramatic mind-set,’ introducing color can be as simple as adding a brighter hued tie, such as these from  Hermes  to a grey or blue suit.   Eventually, introducing a red, pink or turquoise sweater to go under a neutral sports coat can be a gradual relaxed office ensemble.   Pair with jeans or slacks for a more relaxed feel.”Plus, do remember that even very corporate work settings are getting more casual and will be more open to color.

A Guide to Law Firm Of-Counsel Positions

A Guide to Law Firm Of-Counsel Positions A Guide to Law Firm Of-Counsel Positions If you’re familiar with law firms, you’re probably familiar with associates and partners. Partners have an equity stake in the firm  and run things. Associates work there and are paid as employees. Some, but not all, associates aspire to be partners, and the traditional BigLaw “up or out” system seems to have limited options for associates who aren’t made partner eventually. But, there’s another set of options that are becoming increasingly popular, ?non-equity partners and “of counsel” positions. In this article, we’ll talk about counsel positions.? What, you might wonder, is an “of counsel” position? Here’s how the American Bar Association defines it: Definition: A part-time practitioner who practices law in association with a firm, but on a basis different from that of the mainstream lawyers in the firm. Such part-time practitioners are sometimes lawyers who have decided to change from full-time practice, either with that firm or with another, to a part-time one, or sometimes lawyers who have changed careers entirely, as for example former judges or government officials.A retired partner of the firm who, although not actively practicing law, nonetheless remains associated with the firm and available for occasional consultation. A lawyer who is, in effect, a probationary partner-to-be: usually a lawyer brought into the firm laterally with the expectation of becoming a  partner after a relatively short period of time.A permanent status in between those of partner and associate, having the quality of tenure, or something close to it, and lacking that of an expectation of likely promotion to full partner status. Source: Formal Opinion 90-357 of the American Bar Association For example, say you have an attorney in a firm who has excellent skills, but practices in an area that’s not highly profitable (trusts and estates is a common example). Your clients sometimes need the attorney’s expertise, which is highly specialized but aren’t willing to pay a ton of money for it and don’t need it most of the time. You don’t want to send these clients elsewhere, for competitive reasons, but you also don’t want to pay this marginally profitable attorney partner-level compensation. What to do? Make him of-counsel and pay him more than an  associate, but less than a partner. The advantage for the attorney is job security â€" they know that they’re valued by the firm and won’t be pushed out at the end of a certain number of years (as associates who don’t make partner typically will be). Being of counsel, rather than a partner, is also an option for attorneys who prefer a more predictable, less time-intensive schedule. For many, the tradeoff of a substantially lower (but still high by any reasonable measure) salary for lower hours is a good one. People in this category could include attorneys returning to the firm after a stint in government, older attorneys interested in gradually downsizing their practice, and parents returning to the workplace who want a better work-life balance than being a law firm partner typically affords. The Downside of an of Counsel Position There are potentially several downsides to being of counsel rather than a partner. The most obvious is reduced pay. Attorneys who are of counsel will typically make a high associate salary, as opposed to the much higher average profits-per-partner. (Junior partners typically make much less than the average, but the upside potential of being a partner over time is much higher than being a salaried of-counsel.) There’s also a prestige hit to being of counsel. Although this may be offset by the downsides of actually having to do the job, saying you’re a partner at a major law firm sounds impressive! For many attorneys, however, the benefits of having an of-counsel position outweigh the downsides, and it’s a good mix of the steady income of associate life with the relative job security of partnership.

How to be happy in todays crazy world 3 secrets from research

How to be happy in today’s crazy world 3 secrets from research How to be happy in today’s crazy world 3 secrets from research Sometimes it feels like the world is actively conspiring against your happiness. Now before you start folding your tin foil hat, let me say that you might not be paranoid …Right now there are a record number of people on antidepressants. So many that even if you’re not taking antidepressants, well … you still kinda are.Enough people in Western nations consume - and then excrete - the medications that they’re at detectable levels in the water supply.Ladders is now on SmartNews!Download the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: Some one in five U.S. adults is taking at least one drug for a psychiatric problem; nearly one in four middle-aged women in the United States is taking antidepressants at any given time … You can’t escape it: when scientists test the water supply of Western countries, they always find it is laced with antidepressants, because so many of us are taking them and excreting them that they simply can’t be filtered out of the water we drink every day. For the past few decades, we’ve lived under the idea that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in your noggin. And while that is true for some people, more and more research is showing that our dissatisfaction may be due less to a broken brain and more to a broken life. You don’t see so rapid a surge in cases of depression because our genetics or grey matter changed overnight. The world has shifted in ways that are detrimental to the psychological needs of the human animal. That persistent feeling of vague dissatisfaction may be a normal response to abnormal circumstances. The canary in the coal mine.So journalist Johann Hari spent three years on a journey of over forty thousand miles conducting more than 200 interviews with social scientists and psychologists to discover what was wrong with the way we live today that was causing such an explosion of unhappiness. His excellent book is Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solution s.What he found was that while our world has become very technologically connected, all the sources of unhappiness stem from a growing disconnection in other areas of our lives.Let’s find out how to reconnect. And how to live happier lives …Disconnection from other peopleLoneliness is the equivalent of being punched in the face. I mean, literally.Your stress response to both - the increase in your body’s cortisol level - is the same. From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: Feeling lonely, it turned out, caused your cortisol levels to absolutely soar - as much as some of the most disturbing things that can ever happen to you. Becoming acutely lonely, the experiment found, was as stressful as experiencing a physical attack. It’s worth repeating. Being deeply lonely seemed to cause as much stress as being punched by a stranger. And have no illusions, loneliness is an epidemic in the modern world. A few decades ago, the average US citizen reported having three close friends. Since 2004 the most common answer is …Zero. From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: … social scientists have been asking a cross-section of U.S. citizens a simple question for years: “How many confidants do you have?” They wanted to know how many people you could turn to in a crisis, or when something really good happens to you. When they started doing the study several decades ago, the average number of close friends an American had was three. By 2004, the most common answer was none. I can already hear some people crowing: “I might be dissatisfied but how could it be due to loneliness? I’m always around people.”Turns out there’s a difference between being lonely and feeling lonely. This is why someone who works a job surrounded by people and then goes home to a spouse and children, can spend very little time alone - and yet still feel profoundly lonely. From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: In his studies, it turned out that feeling lonely was different from simply being alone. Surprisingly, the sensation of loneliness didn’t have much to do with how many people you spoke to every day, or every week. Some of the people in his study who felt most lonely actually talked to lots of people every day. “There’s a relatively low correlation between the objective connections and perceived connections,” he says. So what do we need to do? To prevent feeling lonely, we must share something with those around us - something meaningful to both you and them. A belief. A cause. An activity. A goal. We need to be “in it together” - not merely together in the middle of a faceless crowd. From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: As he researched this, John discovered that there was a missing ingredient to loneliness, and to recovering from it. To end loneliness, you need other people - plus something else. You also need, he explained to me, to feel you are sharing something with the other person, or the group, that is meaningful to both of you. You have to be in it together - and “it” can be anything that you both think has meaning and value. So join a group. Harvard researcher Robert Putnam has studied group activities for decades - everything from bowling leagues to volunteer groups.Between 1985 and 1994 involvement in community organizations declined by 45%.From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: Today, people still bowl, but they do it alone. They’re in their own lane, doing their own thing. The collective structure has collapsed. Think about everything else we do to come together - like supporting your kid’s school, say. “In the ten short years between 1985 and 1994” alone, he wrote, “active involvement in community organizations … fell by 45 percent.” Famed biologist E.O. Wilson once said, “People must belong to a tribe.” Increasingly, we don’t. But you can fix that.(To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my bestselling book here.)We all know relationships are critical. But there’s something else the modern world is lacking that’s a lot less obvious but no less important …Disconnection from valuesYou pursue “intrinsic values” when you do something solely because you love it. You pursue “extrinsic values” when you chase money or status. Being a patriotic soldier is intrinsic; being a mercenary is extrinsic. The lesson from the research is clear: the more extrinsically motivated you are, the more you feel motivated by money or status, the more depressed and anxious you are. From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: Twenty-two different studies have, in the years since, found that the more materialistic and extrinsically motivated you become, the more depressed you will be. Twelve different studies found that the more materialistic and extrinsically motivated you become, the more anxious you will be. Similar studies, inspired by Tim’s work and using similar techniques, have now been carried out in Britain, Denmark, Germany, India, South Korea, Russia, Romania, Australia, and Canada - and the results, all over the world, keep coming back the same. I know some people are jumping to say, “Well, I’m not like that!” But, to a degree, we have all become more extrinsically motivated. We all care, to some degree, what others think of us and technology often amplifies this to toxic levels. Facebook and Instagram have become gladiatorial status tournaments to show off how cool our lives are.But when we’re counting “likes” on social media, we let others control our self-esteem. And that places your own happiness outside your control. Not good. And even if you win, you lose. Studies show that the achievement of extrinsic goals - the fancy car and the impressive promotion - bring no lasting happiness. None. Meanwhile, when we pursue intrinsic goals like being a better parent or trying to improve our writing skills so our blog posts don’t suck, we feel much happier and less anxious. From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: People who achieved their extrinsic goals didn’t experience any increase in day-to-day happiness - none. They spent a huge amount of energy chasing these goals, but when they fulfilled them, they felt the same as they had at the start. … But people who achieved their intrinsic goals did become significantly happier, and less depressed and anxious. You could track the movement. As they worked at it and felt they became (for example) a better friend - not because they wanted anything out of it but because they felt it was a good thing to do - they became more satisfied with life. You experience “flow” when you’re so involved in something that you lose track of time. You know the old saying: “time flies when you’re having fun.” Flow is a huge contributor to happiness. And the more focused we are on extrinsic goals like status, the fewer flow states we experience. From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: But when Tim studied highly materialistic people, he discovered they experience significantly fewer flow states than the rest of us. Why would that be? He seems to have found an explanation. Imagine if, when Tim was playing the piano every day, he kept thinking: Am I the best piano player in Illinois? Are people going to applaud this performance? Am I going to get paid for this? How much? So what should we do? Yeah, we all have to pay the bills and achieving a decent level of status is a good thing, but we need to start choosing more activities that serve those intrinsic values.Spending more time with those we love rather than those who can help us get ahead. More time playing the guitar because it’s fun rather than sharpening our Excel skills to get that promotion. From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: “The first thing is for people to ask themselves - Am I setting up my life so I can have a chance of succeeding at my intrinsic values? Am I hanging out with the right people, who are going to make me feel loved, as opposed to making me feel like I made it?” Spend a little more time with people that make you smile and doing the things that make you smile - simply because they make you smile.(To learn the seven-step morning ritual that will make you happy all day, click here.)So you’re connecting with people and connecting with your intrinsic values. Great. What’s another connection we’re getting less and less of that the human animal needs?Just like real estate, it’s all about location, location, location …Disconnection from natureAll other things being equal, move closer to nature and you’ll be happier. Move away from nature and you’ll be more depressed. From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: … the people who moved to green areas saw a big reduction in depression, and the people who moved away from green areas saw a big increase in depression. Some might say that’s because rural areas have less crime or less pollution or … Wrong. If you live in the part of a big city with lots of trees, you get happier. Cart yourself over to the section of the city that’s nothing but concrete and you get sadder. From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: They compared deprived inner-city areas that had some green space to very similar deprived inner-city areas without green space. Everything else - like levels of social connections - was the same. But it turned out there was less stress and despair in the greener neighborhood. We use our big human brains so much that we think we’re machines and forget we’re animals. But we are animals.Leave the Panda in the forest with his bamboo and he’s happy. Move him to a zoo and he mopes around, feels stressed out and loses all interest in making little Pandas. Humans aren’t all that different. From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: “We have been animals that move for a lot longer than we have been animals that talk and convey concepts,” she said to me. “But we still think that depression can be cured by this conceptual layer. I think [the first answer is more] simple. Let’s fix the physiology first. Get out. Move.” So what do we do? We simply weren’t meant to spend all our time going from cubicle to couch. Feeling happier can be as simple as spending more time in nature. The research all says that exercise makes us happier. Guess what? When you exercise outdoors the effect is even stronger. From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: When scientists have compared people who run on treadmills in the gym with people who run in nature, they found that both see a reduction in depression - but it’s higher for the people who run in nature. (To learn the best way to motivate yourself to exercise, click here.)Alright, we’ve learned a lot. We’re going “psychologically Paleo” and getting more of what our ancient physiology needs from the very modern world.Time to round it all up - and find out why so many of our efforts to be happier often fail …Sum upHere’s how to be happy in today’s crazy world: Connect With People: Just being around others isn’t enough. Join groups that you share something with. You need to be “in it together” to hit back when loneliness punches you in the face. Connect With Your Intrinsic Values: More “flow” and fewer selfies. More doing what you love because you love it. Chasing status doesn’t lead to lasting happiness; it puts happiness outside your control. Connect with Nature: Go outside for a reason other than to pick up that box from Amazon. So what happens when you make a consistent, concerted effort to be happier? You fail miserably. No joke. Deliberate efforts to be happier do not work … in the US and UK, that is.From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: They tracked thousands of people, some of whom had decided to deliberately pursue happiness and some of whom hadn’t. When they compared the results, they found something they had not expected. If you deliberately try to become happy, you will not become happier- if you live in the United States. But if you live in Russia, Japan, or Taiwan, you will become happier. What’s going on? It’s not that happiness is unachievable or that hard work isn’t rewarded. The issue here is that the US and UK have the most individualistic cultures. And so the efforts people in those countries make are usually individualistic …But happiness comes from our connections to other people. And so when we work toward just making ourselves happy as individuals we often fail. But when we work towards the happiness of a group, we usually succeed. From Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression â€" and the Unexpected Solutions: “The more you think happiness is a social thing, the better off you are,” Brett explained to me, summarizing her findings and reams of other social science. The modern world promotes a culture of “be yourself.” But if you want to be happy, that isn’t always the best idea.To find more joy, spend a little less time being you and little more time being us.This column first appeared on Barking Up The Wrong Tree.

Pros and Cons of Taking Out a Thrift Savings Plan Loan

Pros and Cons of Taking Out a Thrift Savings Plan Loan Pros and Cons of Taking Out a Thrift Savings Plan Loan Taking out a Thrift Savings Plan loan has advantages and disadvantages, but the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages for most people. Even the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) advises federal employees to exhaust all other loan options before borrowing from their Thrift Savings Plan accounts. The Thrift Savings Plan is one of the three primary methods employees under the Federal Employees Retirement System use to save for retirement. The others are pensions and Social Security. Pros Many people find substantial advantages to Thrift Savings Plan loans and opt in despite the OPMs suggestion to exhaust other options first. Low-interest rate:  The interest rate on Thrift Savings Plan loans is the same as the rate of return on the G Fund. This fund is one of the funds available to invest in through the Thrift Savings Plan and is made up of government securities. The G Fund and other Thrift Savings Plan funds are used to create the investment mixes for target date funds available to plan participants. The G Fund typically has a rate of return of less than 2 percent. The rate used for a loan is the G Fund rate the day the loan is taken out. A wide range of allowable loan amounts:  Provided you have the money in your account, you can borrow between $1,000 and $50,000. The Thrift Savings Plan website has a loan calculator you can use to estimate your loan payments.Repayment through payroll deductions:  From a processing standpoint, Thrift Savings Plan loans are easy to repay. Payments are made by payroll deduction.Ability to make additional payments at any time:  If you want to make an additional payment on your loan, you can do that with a loan repayment coupon available on the plan website. The coupon helps ensure that your payment is applied to your loan. If you pay off the extra principal in the early years of your loan, you can pay the loan off early or re-amortize it to make smaller payments. Cons The negative implications of a TSP loan are considerable, and require as much- if not more- attention than the positives. Application processing fee:  A $50 processing fee is applied to each loan. It is deducted from the money you receive when you take out the loan.Missing out on earnings:  This is the most significant disadvantage of taking out a Thrift Savings Plan loan. You are essentially borrowing from your own future when you take out the loan. When you remove the money from your Thrift Savings Plan account, you forgo the investment growth you would have earned. On top of that, you have to pay back your own money with interest. 90-day repayment if you leave federal service:  If you leave federal service while you have a Thrift Savings Plan loan outstanding, you must repay it within 90 days. This Is How Successful People Overcome Their Insecurities

This Is How Successful People Overcome Their Insecurities This Is How Successful People Overcome Their Insecurities Over the past month, I’ve interviewed some of the most exceptional and accomplished people in the world, including Nobel Laureates, Olympic medalists, Oscar winners, and Fortune 500 executives for The Influencers podcast. In the process, I’ve learned one surprising commonality among all these industry leaders. No matter how successful they become, they’re still insanely insecure and want to be loved. We all have insecurities. Even the most beautiful, rich, intelligent, and effective people you know can’t escape this basic human characteristic. From a young age, fashion icon Stacy London suffered from psoriasis all over her body. Musician Brian Rosenworcel says he still feels the pressure to reinvent himself. Jeff Davis, the writer behind Criminal Minds and Teen Wolf, struggled with the very basic elements of his career. Nobel Prize winner and scientist Martin Chalfie admits that he spent much of his life failing. What separates these people from the rest of us and contributes to their success is how they leverage their insecurity. As a society, we often hide what we view as our flaws and weaknesses or try to pretend like they don’t exist at all for fear of embarrassment and rejection. Unfortunately, hiding them doesn’t make them go away. Insecurity doesn’t disappear as you earn more money or gain prestige. The question you have to ask yourself is: What am I going to do with my insecurities? Stacy dedicated herself to helping others feel good about the way they look, Jeff made it his personal mission to achieve mastery and help other struggling creatives, and Martin’s perseverance has transformed the study of biology as we know it. So, are you going to use your insecurities as excuses to avoid doing things that scare and challenge you? Or, will you embrace them to create something impactful? Will you hide your shortcomings behind an overinflated ego, or will you face them head on, and inspire others? Most success stories are borne out of insecurities. They are what drives us to improve, to push forward, to keep learning and gain competence. Leverage your insecurities so they become a source of strength rather than a weakness. If we were all overconfident, we’d never learn from our mistakes and never progress and grow as a result. Instead, embrace your shortcomings and flaws. Use them as motivation and transform them into something better. This article was originally published on Inc. It has been republished here with permission.

10 Jobs That Are Safe From the Robots

10 Jobs That Are Safe From the Robots 10 Jobs That Are Safe From the Robots Are you worried about robots taking your job? Is your occupation safe from automation? The odds of your job being automated might be greater than you think. Forty-seven percent of U.S. jobs are at risk of automation in the next 10 to 20 years, according to Oxford University researchers Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael A. Osborne. Their 2013 paper, “The Future of Employment: How Susceptible Are Jobs to Computerisation?” looked at the probability of automation for 702 occupations. Their research showed that higher-paying jobs requiring more education were less at risk. Jobs That Are at the Most Risk of Automation Not every white-collar job has a solid occupational outlook in the age of robots. In short, the jobs that are most at risk are the ones that involve repetitive work that a robot (or a software program) can perform more cheaply than a human. While manufacturing and transportation jobs are at risk, so are office jobs like Insurance Underwriter, Tax Preparer, and Library Technician. If you’re contemplating a career change, and want to pick an occupation at low risk of robot takeover, your best bet is obviously to pick one that humans do better than machines. Specifically, you might want to target jobs that involve what Frey and Osborne identify as three “computerisation bottlenecks”: Perception and Manipulation â€" Finger or manual dexterity, or the necessity to work in cramped spaces/awkward positionsCreative Intelligence â€" Originality and fine artsSocial Intelligence â€" Social perceptiveness, negotiation, persuasion, and caring for others Top 10 Jobs That Are Safe From Robots These jobs had the lowest chance of being automated in the next decade or two, according to the research by the BLS. You can search the Occupational Outlook Handbook by job to get a summary of quick facts. Note that they each include at least one of the bottlenecks described in the paper â€" dexterity, creative intelligence, or social intelligence. 1. Orthotists and Prosthetists People with these jobs create artificial limbs and other medical devices to help patients regain mobility. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that this occupation is growing quickly in part because “the large baby-boom population is aging, and orthotists and prosthetists will be needed because both diabetes and cardiovascular disease, the two leading causes of limb loss, are more common among older people.” A master’s degree and certification are required in these jobs. Median Annual Income: $66,240Occupational Outlook 2016-2026: 22 percent 8. Healthcare Social Workers Healthcare Social Workers often work in hospitals, performing case management and helping patients and families navigate the healthcare system. This job typically requires a postsecondary nondegree award and on-the-job training. Median Annual Income: $76,170Occupational Outlook 2016-2026: 7 percent What These Robot-Safe Jobs Have in Common Unsurprisingly, when the Oxford team ranked occupations in terms of low potential for automation, health care professions topped the list. These jobs typically require caring for others, social perceptiveness, and dexterity. They may even involve creativity and negotiation. (Just ask any Registered Nurse.) But the most significant thing about the list is that there are jobs for all education levels and interests. Look at the top 10 occupations in the ranking. Audiologists, Emergency Management Directors, and Firstline Supervisors of Mechanics have very different skill sets â€" but the unique requirements of their jobs make these occupations much easier for a human than a robot. Bottom line, building a career that’s safe from the robots may require additional education and training, as well as some careful planning. But it might not require a wholesale shift in interests and priorities.

A template starts the process for you by laying out certain basic sections hiring managers expect to see, such as name and contact information. Once you have the requirements covered, it’s much easier to customize your resume and make your achievements shine. Why Use a Resume Template You may be great at your job, but that doesnt mean youre equally skilled when it comes to designing a professional resume. Even if you are adept at writing this kind of document, the whole process is time-consuming. Not only does a template save time, but it reminds you of exactly what sections to include. Even if youre not a rookie when it comes to resume writing, its always useful to review resume templates and samples when preparing your resume. That way, you can get an idea of what a resume should (and could) look like. Tips for Using a Resume Template The best way to use a resume template, or sample resume, is as a starting point. Dont think of it as something engraved in stone. In other words, just because the template uses a Times New Roman font, that doesnt mean that you cant use your preferred Arial font. And, if the resume template includes an objectives section, but you prefer to have a summary section, feel free to make the adjustment. In fact, personalizing a resume template is advantageous. After all, nearly every resume template out there is available to every other job applicant out there, and it pays to stand out from the crowd. Just be sure to stay within the boundaries of whats appropriate when you personalize your resume. For example, while you can change the font, be sure to stick with a professional, resume-appropriate font choice. After reviewing a few options, choose the template that appeals to you the most. Part of the template selection process may involve deciding what type of resume youd like to have: functional, targeted, chronological, or some hybrid option. Once youve selected a template, add your information. Then, tweak and edit the document to personalize your resume, making sure it highlights your unique skills and abilities.
